Interoception is the sense of the internal state of your body. It is the body’s sense of its physiological condition.
This has to do with the awareness that one has of what is going on in the body – heart rate and blood pressure, breathing/air hunger, pain, muscular and visceral sensations, hunger, thirst, temperature etc.
Someone who has good interoception is able to sense how their body is feeling internally. Noticing when the heart is racing, when the body is carrying a lot of muscle tension, when breathing is shallow or poor etc. allows you to make the adjustments needed to get your body back to homeostasis (normal resting state).
It is critical to be aware of these things, as many people these days lose touch with the state the body is in.
Increased environmental stimulation and stress these days is leading to people being chronically stressed out. Stress and anxiety are highly related to interoception. Have you ever noticed when you were really stressed out, that you are barely breathing, or at least not breathing through the stomach? If you stop for a moment a take a few really deep breaths, you will start feeling more relaxed.
The first step towards controlling your body’s state is being able to get in touch with how you are breathing, how your heart is beating, and how your body is doing overall so you can take the appropriate measures to return it back to normal. ☝️😌
If you listen to your body when it whispers, you don’t have to hear it scream. 🙌
